Cape Burkhan is the heart of Olkhon Island, one of the nine sacred sites of Asia, and a federally significant cultural (archaeological) heritage site. It is a place that attracts tens of thousands of tourists from around the world every year. Its image has become the hallmark not only of Olkhon but of the entire Lake Baikal.
However, high tourist pressure (with an annual growth in visits of up to 30%) has led to serious consequences: the natural landscape is degrading, vegetation is disappearing, ravines are expanding, and the unique ecosystem is suffering.
Since 2016, the charitable foundation “Give Planet Life,” together with the administration of the Khuzhir Municipal District and with the support of the Government of the Irkutsk Region, has been working on the creation of the “Cape Burkhan” nature park — a territory where the preservation of cultural and natural heritage will be a priority, and tourist flows will be organized without harm to the unique landscape.

For those who choose to support the project financially, stylized serges — traditional ritual poles — have been designed and will be installed along the road to Cape Burkhan (Pushkin Street, Khuzhir village). They will bear information about partners and benefactors. This is a token of gratitude to those who, through their involvement, help preserve nature for future generations.

The administration of the Khuzhir Municipal District approached the foundation with a request to help preserve Cape Burkhan. Work began on the concept for the development of the area.
With the support of the Government of the Irkutsk Region and private benefactors, a concept was developed as part of an international competition. The project received broad public and expert support. A partner community was formed, which included: the Slata retail chain, the I.I. Molchanov-Sibirsky Irkutsk Regional Library, the AS Baikal TV media holding, Irkutsk National Research Technical University, Heineken (the "Clean Shores of Baikal" project), and many others.
The project passed all necessary approvals. The management of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Zapovednoye Pribaikalye" decided to include the creation of the park in its development plans. Practical work began: trail marking, installation of the first information panels, and environmental patrols. The project received grant support from En+ Group and continued cooperation with its partners.

Yes, volunteer recruitment is open annually from May to September. We are primarily looking for "ecological wardens" — proactive people over the age of 21. Your tasks will include: trail patrolling, engaging with violators (not just "making noise," but explaining the laws of the Baikal Natural Territory), as well as cleaning up hidden litter that machinery cannot reach. Volunteers stay in a tent camp run by the foundation's partner; meals are covered, but you cover your own travel to Irkutsk. Applications are accepted via the form on our website.
